Deepwater Horizon computer system afflicted with BSODs: Tech

The chief electronics technician aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig which exploded and resulted in the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico testified to a federal panel on Friday. Mike Williams said that alarm systems were “inhibited” to prevent alarms from sounding at off-hours, and the computer system was afflicted by frequent “blue screens of death” (BSOD). In terms of the alarm system, Williams told members of the investigative panel that that the oil rig’s general alarm and indicator lights were set to “inhibited,” which meant that while they would record high gas levels or fire, they wouldn’t trigger any warning sirens.

Cell phone industry trade group sues over SF radiation display law

CTIA, the wireless industry’s biggest trade group announced on Friday that it has sued the city of San Francisco over its recently passed ordinance requiring retailers to display the radiation levels emitted from cellphones.
